This latest addition to our kitchen cabinets collections has a warm, rich look and lots of great detail. The construction is a step up and is intended for the more advanced handyman. Assembly is still a breeze, but the face frames of the cabinets are actually dovetailed and the cabinet sides slide into the groove to form a super strong, pemenant joint. This means you will need a staple or brad gun to asssemble them. You can purchase an inexpensive brad gun from your local hardware store.

DIY Project: Antique Your RTA Kitchen Cabinets

It is important to choose cabinets that you like, and generally for antiquing you are going to need to choose white or cream colored cabinets. A good choice for discount kitchen cabinets is Mocha Cream from Kitchen Cabinet Depot, because its warm white tones work very well for antiquing. After selecting your cabinets, install them (easy, if they are ready to assemble) or have them installed.

Once installed, you can begin to antique them. Apply painters tape or masking tape around the cabinets against the wall to prevent damage to the wall. It is important to clean the cabinets to remove free-floating particles and grime. Once cleaned, it is critical that the cabinets are 100% dry before proceeding to the next step. If they are not dry, the cabinets could get damaged and the antiquing would not be as effective.

Once dry you are ready to begin sanding. Sand the edges like this:

Be sure to only sand the edges of each door and opening, and continue sanding until the natural wood shows through. The sanding materials would be a sanding block wrapped in 80-grit sandpaper.

Next you are going to apply the antiquing glaze, which can be found at major home improvement stores. Remember to put on latex or rubber gloves to protect your hands. Using a clean rag, apply a very small amount of the antiquing glaze to the front or side of a cabinet in small and circular motions until you have applied a thin layer to the entire section. Working a section at a time, lightly smooth out the circular marks, while gently wiping in an up-and-down motion until the desired effect is created.

Then you will apply a dark edge to your cabinet by adding more antiquing glaze to the distressed parts of the cabinets and doors. Apply the glaze liberally in this step as you are going to remove it next. After wrapping a clean smooth rag around your pointer finger, carefully wipe off any excess that has gathered outside of your desired distressing spots. You have finished distressing your first cabinet!

Continue distressing the remaining cabinets, one cabinet at a time. Be sure to step back and check the overall effect every once in a while to ensure consistency. Let the glaze dry at least 24 hours before spraying on a light coat of a clear, non-yellowing sealer to ensure a long-lasting finish. Be sure it is a non-yellowing sealant – avoid regular polyurethane, which, when applied over white paint, will turn yellow.

Now you have a pattern or template to use. Put the jig on each cabinet to determine where to drill the holes for the hardware. Once the holes are created, screw the hardware into the cabinet you are done!

My husband and I ripped out our carpet and installed a beautiful oak hardwood floor. We’ve decided that our next project is going to be building an entertainment unit (wall) in our family room. My question is: should the entertainment unit match the floor exactly? The flooring is a medium oak stain called Gunstock. It’s almost like a warm caramel color. Does it look funny if the wood tones in a room are a little lighter or a little darker than the flooring? I hope this makes sense. I’m not into matchy-matchy stuff, but I don’t want overkill on one color.

IMHO, no. Your new floor sounds nice. I would not build a unit that would match the floor. It would just blend to much together and not stand out. That unit is it’s own piece of furniture. Mixing and matching woods and colors is very nice.

Same thing when you put wood floors in the kitchen. They always looks better with contrasting cabinets … otherwise it’s just a mass of the same.

Warm colors are appealing and inviting to the senses. Usually the red and yellow based tones are selected for kitchens. They convey a hospitality element. All unfinished kitchen cabinets are not the same. Some types of wood absorb stains better than others. A wood’s final color depends upon its hardness and original shade. It’s easier to darken wood than to lighten it, so select unfinished cabinets accordingly. Light colored woods are ash, maple, pine, oak, birch, beech, chestnut and elm. Medium colored woods include cherry, teak, butternut and rosewood. Darker colored woods are hickory and mahogany.

If you plan on painting, staining or glazing kitchen cabinets, you can use cheaper types of wood. Oak cabinets can be stained to look like expensive mahogany or cherry.

Before making your final choice, try various types of stain on samples of wood you’re considering. Compare those colors against the rest of your kitchen’s woodwork. Which ones complement the furniture you have?
