New Cabinets - What Color should you choose?

Deciding what color bathroom or kitchen cabinets to choose can be a difficult decision. Going back and forth from one color to another, and trying to take in all contributing factors such as other influencing colors already in the space you will be adding the cabinets is a lot to think about. The color and finish you choose for your cabinets will decide the look of the room, so here are a few tips to aid you along the way to creating your ideal look for your cabinets.

The first step is to consider the tone of the cabinets you would like to install. For example, would you like a darker or lighter wood? When considering the shade keep in mind that finishes can make a wood look darker, so if you are in between tones it is better to go with the lighter one. It’s easier to make a lighter wood look darker than a darker wood to look lighter.

For smaller spaces it would be beneficial to choose a lighter wood for your cabinets because lighter shades will make the room appear larger and more spacious. Lighter cabinets will also brighten up a room that already has darker tones. By contrasting the light and dark tones you will create a trendy and contemporary look.

Woods that have a light brown or tan look are considered medium toned woods. Such woods are Beech and Cherry wood. These types of woods add grace and class to a room and work well in all types of rooms from traditional to modern. Depending on the finish chosen, medium toned wood cabinets may appear light or dark.

To create a dramatic look for your bathroom or kitchen spaces consider a darker wood for your cabinets like Butternut, Rosewood, or Mahogany cabinets. These types of woods are great for more traditional styling. Typically the darker woods range from medium-brown to light-black shades. However, before deciding on the darker wood remember it is easier to make lighter wood darker than dark wood lighter.
